New Data Available on masking in schools

From Zach Moser:

After speaking with many concerned citizens and Board members, it is clear that the effectiveness of masks is still in question in the minds of most Dent County residents. I wanted to share this study that was published this week in MMWR. The study looked at the pediatric case rate in schools with and without mask mandates. In districts with masks, case rates were significantly smaller compared to districts without mask mandates. The study can be found here.

Pediatric COVID-19 Cases in Counties With and Without School Mask Requirements — United States, July 1–September 4, 2021 | MMWR
This report describes pediatric COVID-19 cases in counties with and without school mask requirements.

Another study showed similar results:

Association Between K–12 School Mask Policies and School-Associated COVID-19 Outbreaks — Maricopa and Pima Counties, Arizona, July–August 2021 | MMWR
This report describes Arizona school associated COVID-19 outbreaks higher in schools without mask requirements than in schools with mask requirements.

In summary, the utility of masks is well defined at this point. They are important to slowing the spread of COVID-19. Please share this information with your boards and consider sharing it with your parents as well to demonstrate the purpose of the mask mandates.
Thank you,
